04/30/2008 David Blaine sets new breath hold record on Oprah.
David Blaine set a new world record breath hold dive on "The Oprah Winfrey Show" today (AP news article). The dive was supervised by Guinness World Records and Dr. Ralph Potkin. Blaine used a technique called "lung packing" or "glossopharyngeal insufflation" while breathing 100% oxygen prior to his breath hold. He surfaced after 17 minutes, four and four-tenths seconds. The previous record of 16 minutes 32 seconds was held by Peter Colat of Switzerland.

04/10/2008 US Navy Diving Manual, Rev 6 Released.
The US Navy Supervisor of Diving and Salvage released the newest version of the US Navy Diving Manual. Revision six is available for download here. This update includes updated US Navy Dive Tables.

03/10/2008 US Navy Guidance for Diving in Contaminated Waters Released.
The US Navy Supervisor of Diving and Salvage released the newest version of the US Navy Guidance for Diving in Contaminated Waters. This updated report is available for download here.

01/24/2008 The Rubicon Research Repository Welcomes SPUMS And Reaches 5000 items.
The Rubicon Foundation, Inc. would like to welcome The South Pacific Underwater Medicine Society (SPUMS) and thank them for allowing us to include their journal in the Rubicon Research Repository. The SPUMS Journal was first published in 1971. The collection here will hold their journal articles and maintain a three year embargo for their members.

Today we also added the 5000th item to the Rubicon Research Repository. Growth of this resource is due to the hard work of our volunteers.

12/28/2007 Rubicon To Sponsor Divers Alert Network (DAN) Technical Diving Conference.
We are proud to announce that we will serve as "bronze" sponsors for the Divers Alert Network Technical Diving Conference in January.

10/05/2007      Updates and a new project!
We are pleased to announce that the Rubicon Foundation, Inc. has passed the five (5) year advanced ruling period and are now officially recognized as a public charity under section 501(c)(3) of the United States tax code.

Over that last few months we have seen other milestones of note:
   * DAN published an announcement about the Rubicon Research Repository (RRR) in their Alert Diver Magazine
   * The US Naval Operational Medical Lessons Learned Center included an announcement in their newsletter to fleet medical personnel.
   * The US Office of Naval Research included funding for years 2008, 2009, and 2010 to support the further growth of the RRR.
   * The South Pacific Undersea Medicine Society started transferring their journal for inclusion in the RRR. This journal currently covers 30 years. More on this soon.
   * The Royal Australian Navy has scanned their research technical reports and placed them in transit for inclusion in the RRR.
   * We placed our tee shirts, coffee mugs, and mouse pads for sale online in our first real fund raising effort.

Some of our previous milestones include:

The following collections for UHMS:
   * the Undersea Baromedical Research (1974 to 1992);
   * the Undersea and Hyperbaric Medicine (1993 to present);
   * UHMS Workshops with support from DAN;
   * Underwater Medicine and Related Sciences supported by UHMS;
   * Hyperbaric Oxygen Review (1980 to 1985); and
   * Journal of Hyperbaric Medicine (1986 to 1992).

Other collections:
   * American Academy of Underwater Sciences workshops and meeting proceedings (1986 to 1992);
   * Professional Association of Diving Instructors/ Diving Science And Technology Corp (PADI/ DSAT) symposia and technical reports;
   * DAN's series of Report on Decompression Illness, Diving Fatalities, and Project Dive Exploration reports (1988-2007);
   * Numerous Technical reports from groups such as the Defence R&D Canada, US Navy Experimental Diving Unit, US Naval Medical Research Center, Naval Submarine Medical Research Lab, US Office of Naval Research, and US Air Force School of Aerospace Medicine.

While the efforts listed above are related to archiving literature, we will be starting a new project next week with the goal of keeping us all up to date. For more information about The Rubicon Review, please check out the project page.

04/30/2007 Rubicon Research Repository Logo Unveiled.
This logo is based on the idea that a "porthole" is a method of viewing the world around us and that the Rubicon Research Repository (RRR) performs that same duty as a "web portal" by allowing the users a glimpse into Research and History. More information about the logo design as well as the history of the actual porthole is available on our Logo Page. Please provide a link to the Rubicon Research Repository and use this logo on your own web site.

02/28/2007 Abstracts accepted.
We have had two abstracts accepted for publication by the Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society (UHMS) Scientific Committee. These will be presented at the UHMS Annual Meeting in June. More information about this meeting can be found on the UHMS web site.

We would like to take the opportunity to thank our volunteers for their assistance in adding content to the Rubicon Research Repository. Without their help, the resources we are building would not be growing as fast as they are.

Featured Project: Archive

Our Archive project was born out of our Rubicon Research Repository. The goal of this project was to make collections of printed research available in an electronic format. It is our hope that by making these collections of often hard to find documents electronic, they will be have a broader reach. Thank you for your interest in our collections.
