03/31/2010      Hobbs named 2010 DAN Rolex Diver of the Year
This weekend, Gene Hobbs was named the 2010 Divers Alert Network (DAN) Rolex "Diver of the Year" at the annual Beneath the Sea dive show in Secaucus, N.J.. The award has been given annually since 1989 to divers that exhibit "an excellent record of public service in scuba diving who is also a strong advocate of DAN and scuba diving health and safety. The award includes a plaque and a specially engraved Rolex Oyster Perpetual Submariner Date dive watch." (DAN press release)

Hobbs, a founding board member of Rubicon, was recognized for his work in creating our Rubicon Research Repository project to bring the available diving and hyperbaric medical literature to the public free of charge. Hobbs noted that none of this would be possible without the donations and countless volunteer hours that have been given from divers around the world.

02/01/2010      Lambertsen collection update
The collection pre-processing by volunteers from both the UHMS and the Rubicon Foundation is well underway. The collection has been sorted by the media type. We are currently finishing the books and should move to the technical reports soon. We do not have an estimated time for the final delivery to the Duke Medical Center Library and Archives staff at this time.

01/01/2010      NSMRL collection update
Our US Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) funded project to add the Naval Submarine Medical Research Lab (NSMRL) technical reports to the Rubicon Research Repository has completed the tedious process of gathering security information on these documents. The NSMRL librarian has served a vital role in assisting us with securing available documents. We expect to complete the addition of these documents in the upcoming weeks.

12/17/2009      Lambertsen collection move to UHMS
Dr. Christian Lambertsen, environmental medicine research professor at the University of Pennsylvania, has donated his collection of literature and research to the Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society (UHMS) Charles W. Shilling Library. Today, the raw data, books, and technical reports arrived at Duke University Medical Center. The Shilling Library is managed by Duke and will allow for ongoing access to this collection of valuable history and research. This transfer of knowledge comes as a result of months of planning, contract and copyright negotiations, and careful organization prior to shipping.

The collection is going to be pre-processed by volunteers from both the UHMS and the Rubicon Foundation prior to final delivery to the Duke Medical Center Library and Archives staff.

Included in this collection are numerous 16mm films that contain footage from the predictive dive series. These tests defined much of what we know about the operational use of oxygen in diving. If you are able to assist in the conversion of these films to a digital format or would like to donate to support this effort, please contact us.

Featured Project: Archive

Our Archive project was born out of our Rubicon Research Repository. The goal of this project was to make collections of printed research available in an electronic format. It is our hope that by making these collections of often hard to find documents electronic, they will be have a broader reach. Thank you for your interest in our collections.
