02/28/2007      Abstracts accepted.
We have had two abstracts accepted for publication by the Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society (UHMS) Scientific Committee. These will be presented at the UHMS Annual Meeting in June. More information about this meeting can be found on the UHMS web site.

We would like to take the opportunity to thank our volunteers for their assistance in adding content to the Rubicon Research Repository. Without their help, the resources we are building would not be growing as fast as they are.

01/04/2007      Passing of a Pioneer
John J. McAniff, Sr passed away today after a long battle with cancer. John is best know for his pioneering work in writing the US Underwater Diving Fatality Statistics at the University of Rhode Island and published by the US Dept. of Commerce and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Undersea Research Program. More about Mr. McAniff can be found in the Divers Alert Network news.

We have scanned eight of these reports into the Repository in cooperation with DAN Research (RRR ID: 4064 to 4071).

12/10/2006      New Collections Added to the Repository.
The first collection contains technical reports published by Defence R&D Canada (DRDC), formerly Defence and Civil Institute of Environmental Medicine (DCIEM). A special thank you is extended to Dr. Nishi for his hard work to secure permission for the addition of these documents.

The second collection of workshops held by the Smithsonian Institution Scientific Diving Program. The Smithsonian Institution Scientific Diving Program is a research support program in the Office of the Under Secretary for Science. Scientists from interdisciplinary fields are using scuba diving as a research tool to study the underwater environment. We would like to thank Michael Lang and Laurie Penland for their consideration to be included in this collection. You can learn more about their work on the Diving Program web site.

This is 304 articles published from 1993 to 2001. Note: Electronic copies of the Undersea Hyperbaric Medicine Journal for 2002 to current are available to Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society (UHMS) members on the UHMS web site.

06/10/2004      NLM update on Missing UHMS journals
We requested an update from the National Library of Medicine. Their update is included below:

custserv@nlm.nih.gov
06/10/2004 10:39 AST
The issue is marked as being on file, and apparently that is a new entry as it came up at the top of the list.

This is our general information about the time it takes for a journal to be indexed in MEDLINE. It is difficult to give a precise answer. Depending on publisher distribution or the mail, some journals are received in advance of the cover date; others are received weeks or even months afterward. Publishers who send us copies of their journals in electronic format help to speed the process. For more information about publisher-supplied citations, see http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov:80/entrez/query/static/overview.html#PubMedOnly.

With that in mind, our monthly statistics show that approximately 30% of all journals were indexed in MEDLINE within 30 days of receipt and 60% were completed within 60 days. We record of the length of time starting from the date a journal is received at the Library.

More detail about the NLM indexing process is in the following:

Customer Service
National Library of Medicine
8600 Rockville Pike
Bethesda, MD 20894
custserv@nlm.nih.gov

The National Library of Medicine (NLM) is the largest medical library in the world. The goal of the NLM is to collect, organize and make available biomedical literature to advance medical science and improve public health. The NLM does not do research for individuals or send materials. The NLM makes available a variety of health information sources and offers assistance to find and use them. Links to products and services are at http://www.nlm.nih.gov/.

05/10/2004      IRS Application submitted
Our application for Internal Revenue Service 501 (c) (3) status is complete and submitted. We would like to thank Matt Levin and Bill Bomar for their help in completing this long application.

04/12/2004      UHMS articles missing from NLM database
We are continuing work on the journal article collection for the Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society. We have started to connect all of the articles to their citations in the Endnote 7.0 Database. It turns out that the eight articles included in Volume two, number 3, September 1975 were not added to the PubMed Database. Today we wrote the National Library of Medicine Customer Service to let them know we have some missing articles in the UHMS collection and need to know how to update their system!

12/20/2003      Project update
More of the journals have arrived from the Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society Library today!

12/13/2003      Start of the UBR archive scanning
Today is the start of the bulk scanning of the Undersea Biomedical Research (UBR) articles. Our scanner has arrived and some of the bindings have been cut on the early 1973 UBR articles. This will be a full week of scanning and the first chance we will have to truly understand how large this project is really going to be. One scan down, about 1000 more to go!

09/09/2003      UHMS journals arrive
The first few boxes of journals arrived today from the Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society home office. After logging in the journals, they will be off to get their bindings cut.

03/18/2003      Archive logistic planning
After speaking with Don Chandler, the UHMS Exec. Director, and Kathy Davidson, the UHMS Librarian, we are optimistic that we will have the first part of the journals in hand soon. Once they arrive we will have the bindings cut off a small batch and start the bulk scanning.

01/06/2003      UHMS interest in project assessed
We started discussions with Richard Vann, PhD of the Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society (UHMS) to look at making an electronic archive of the societies journals. The collection consists of the Undersea Biomedical Research Collection (1974 to 1992) and the Undersea and Hyperbaric Medicine journals (1993 to current). We would like to make these collections electronically available to aid divers and researchers worldwide. The copyright to this material is owned by the Society so they will be deciding how to best make these articles available once the projects are completed.

02/06/2003      NC non-profit status
The state of North Carolina has just granted us non-profit status within the state pending our approval by the Internal Revenue Service.

08/23/2002      NC Articles of Incorporation
Our Articles of Incorporation have officially been accepted by the State of North Carolina!
