04/19/2009 UHMS Workshops added to the RRR
In 2005, Rubicon was tasked with scanning the Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society (UHMS) Workshop collection. We needed a new computer and more external storage to take on an undertaking of this size and the Divers Alert Network stepped in with the needed equipment to complete the scanning in memory of Dr. Ed Thalmann. Several of these workshops have been included in the Rubicon Research Repository (RRR) for some time however many were not due to copyright restrictions. We are VERY pleased that Dr. Bennett, UHMS Executive Director, has granted permission to place each of these valuable reports into the Repository. A list of the workshops and links to their locations in the RRR can be found in the Workshops finding aid.

Capt. Willard Franklyn "Bill" Searle Jr. USN (ret.) died at his home in Alexandria, Virginia of complications from Parkinson's disease. Capt Searle was known for his huge impact on Diving and Salvage Operations in the US Navy. The US Navy commissioned oral histories by John T Mason, Jr. from 1971 to 1974. They remain in draft form but are made available through Rubicon by the efforts of Capt Robert C. Bornmann MD, USN (ret.) and Capt Richard D. Vann, PhD, USNR (ret.) to ensure their preservation. The oral histories can be found on the Searle Project page.

09/26/2008 Underwater Physiology Symposium Finding Aid.
The first Underwater Physiology Symposium was hosted in 1955. To date there have been ten meetings discussing many areas of hyperbaric physiology, hyperbaric medicine, breathing apparatus use and design as well as many other topics related to living and working under the sea. This is a very unique collection of work and our goal in making this finding aid available is to allow researchers access to work that may not have been published through the traditional peer reviewed journal process. Please check out the Underwater Physiology Symposium Finding Aid. A disk containing each of these papers is available through the Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society here.
Use the "find in this page" feature of your web browser to search the titles and authors from this series.

We would like to take the opportunity to thank our volunteers for their assistance in adding content to the Rubicon Research Repository. Without their help, the resources we are building would not be growing as fast as they are.
If you need help getting started with the Rubicon Research Repository, please visit our frequently asked questions page. For further information, click the file to download a presentation on publicly accessible collections of diving literature we prepared for our last board meeting. (Dive_Med_Lit.pdf) This file will be updated periodically so please check back.
The addition of these collections is a major step in building the electronic resources available to divers, aviators, and researchers everywhere. Please click on the Pay-Pal link to the right or visit our Donation page for more options on how to make a tax-deductible donation today! Your donation will support other projects that make the available resources more accessible. The continuation of this work is only made possible by donations from users like you. 06/10/2004 NLM update on Missing UHMS journals We requested an update from the National Library of Medicine. Their update is included below:
custserv@nlm.nih.gov
06/10/2004 10:39 AST
The issue is marked as being on file, and apparently that is a new entry as it came up at the top of the list.
This is our general information about the time it
takes for a journal to be indexed in MEDLINE. It is difficult to
give a precise answer. Depending on publisher distribution or
the mail, some journals are received in advance of the cover
date; others are received weeks or even months afterward.
Publishers who send us copies of their journals in electronic
format help to speed the process. For more information about
publisher-supplied citations, see
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov:80/entrez/query/static/overview.html#PubMedOnly.
With that in mind, our monthly statistics show that
approximately 30% of all journals were indexed in MEDLINE
within 30 days of receipt and 60% were completed within 60
days. We record of the length of time starting from the date a
journal is received at the Library.
More detail about the NLM indexing process is in the
following:

04/12/2004 UHMS articles missing from NLM database We are continuing work on the journal article collection for the Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society. We have started to connect all of the articles to their citations in the Endnote 7.0 Database. It turns out that the eight articles included in Volume two, number 3, September 1975 were not added to the PubMed Database. Today we wrote the National Library of Medicine Customer Service to let them know we have some missing articles in the UHMS collection and need to know how to update their system!

12/20/2003 Project update More of the journals have arrived from the Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society Library today!
|
12/13/2003 Start of the UBR archive scanning Today is the start of the bulk scanning of the Undersea Biomedical Research (UBR) articles. Our scanner has arrived and some of the bindings have been cut on the early 1973 UBR articles. This will be a full week of scanning and the first chance we will have to truly understand how large this project is really going to be. One scan down, about 1000 more to go!

09/09/2003 UHMS journals arrive The first few boxes of journals arrived today from the Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society home office. After logging in the journals, they will be off to get their bindings cut.
|
03/18/2003 Archive logistic planning After speaking with Don Chandler, the UHMS Exec. Director, and Kathy Davidson, the UHMS Librarian, we are optimistic that we will have the first part of the journals in hand soon. Once they arrive we will have the bindings cut off a small batch and start the bulk scanning.

01/06/2003 UHMS interest in project assessed We started discussions with Richard Vann, PhD of the Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society (UHMS) to look at making an electronic archive of the societies journals. The collection consists of the Undersea Biomedical Research Collection (1974 to 1992) and the Undersea and Hyperbaric Medicine journals (1993 to current). We would like to make these collections electronically available to aid divers and researchers worldwide. The copyright to this material is owned by the Society so they will be deciding how to best make these articles available once the projects are completed.
